CAL Crochet Road Play Mat - Fir / Pine Tree



A little bonus tutorial for the crochet-a-long Road Play Mat, for a little Fir Pine Tree, which would also be great as a miniature Christmas tree!

For this tutorial you will need;

- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- DK/Light worsted weight yarn in green and brown
- Toy stuffing or yarn scraps for stuffing

Abbreviations

G = green yarn
B = brown yarn

ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet

Pattern

Row 1
Using G and a 3.5mm crochet hook ch9, sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in next st, 1sc in next 2 sts, 1hdc in next 2 sts, 1dc in last 2 sts - (8)

Row 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here or throughout), TURN, 1dc in first 2 sts, 1hdc in next 2 sts, 1sc in next 2 sts, 1sl st in last 2 sts - (8)

Row 3
Ch1, TURN, 1sl st in first 2 sts, 1sc in next 2 sts, 1hdc in next 2 sts, 1dc in last 2 sts - (8)

Rows 4 - 8
Repeat rows 2 and 3, ending on a row 2 at the narrow end.

Row 9
Fold your work flat and work 1 sl st neatly down edge to wide end, joining as you go to make a cone shape.

Round 10 (you are now working in the round)
Work 1sc neatly around bottom edge of tree, work to an even number of sts, I worked to 16 sts, sl st in 1st sc to join the round - (16)

Round 11
Ch1, and starting in the same st as your previous sl st *sc2tog*, repeat from * to * until end, sl st in 1st sc2tog to join, joining B as you do - (8)

Stuff your tree at this point.

Rounds 12 -15
Ch1, 1sc in same st as previous sl st, 1sc in ea st around, sl st in 1st sc to join - (8) Fasten off and sew onto a square in the CAL, or if you prefer you can sew the remaining gap closed or sc2tog until closed to make as an individual item.
