CAL Crochet Road Play Mat - Tutorial 4: Wheat & Ploughed Field

Welcome to Episode 4 of my Crochet-a-Long Road Play Mat, where each week I have been sharing a new square design which we will make into a road play or blanket for little ones. Today I am showing you how to crochet the Wheat Field and Hay Bails square and the Ploughed Field square.

For this tutorial you will need the following materials;
  • DK/Light worsted weight yarn in yellow and brown
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook
Additional yarn colours and materials required for the complete CAL are;

- DK/Light worsted weight yarn in;
  • blue
  • white
  • grey
  • green
  • orange
  • pink or purple
  • extra colours of your choice for flowers and additional items such as cars
- Some toy stuffing or yarn scraps for stuffing is also required

One average 50g/100g ball of say acrylic yarn, in each colour, should be more than enough for this CAL. If you plan to make a bigger play mat however, you will require more yarn, especially in green.

We are working to 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4") squares, but you can make your squares as big or as small as you like as long as they are square (or fit) at the end. I say fit as some people have made longer road and pond pieces which equate to two or three squares in width/length.

This pattern is in US terminology.

Terminology

ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
hdc8tog = half double crochet 8 stitches together for decrease into 1 stitch
sk = skip
ea = each
st(s) = stitch(es)
hdcBS = half double crochet bead stitch

Wheat Field with Hay Bails
I always recommend watching the video tutorial to accompany this pattern if you get stuck.

Row 1
Using a 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook and your yellow yarn, work 18 hdc foundation stitches - (18)

Alternatively you can chain 19, work 1hdc into your 3rd st from hook (don't count the loop on your hook) and crochet 1hdc in ea st along, the chains at the end count as a hdc.

Row 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here and onwards), TURN, 1hdc in first 5 sts, 8hdc in next st, 1hdc in next 5 sts, 8hdc in next st, 1hdc in last 6 sts - (32)

Row 3
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and ea st along - (32)

Row 4
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 5 sts, hdc8tog, 1hdc in next 5 sts, hdc8tog, 1hdc in last 6 sts - (18)

Rows 5 - 6
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and ea st along - (18)

Row 7
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 8 sts, 8hdc in next st, 1hdc in last 9 sts - (25)

Row 8
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and ea st along - (25)

Row 9
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 8 sts, hdc8tog, 1hdc in last 9 sts - (18)

Rows 10 - 11
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and ea st along - (18)

Rows 12 - 15
Repeat rows 2 to 5, fasten off and tie in all tails making sure your hay bails are all popped out to the same side.

You will need 1 Wheat Field Square for the CAL.

Ploughed Field
I always recommend watching the video tutorial to accompany this pattern if you get stuck, especially as this pattern uses a half double crochet Bead Stitch variation.

Special Stitch: hdcBS - half double crochet Bead Stitch
*Yarn over, place hook in large gap between last two half double crochets, yarn over and pull yarn around hdc post* repeat from * to * twice more, yarn over pull through all loops to finish.

Row 1
Using a 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook and your brown yarn, work 18 hdc foundation stitches - (18)

Alternatively you can chain 19, work 1hdc into your 3rd st from hook (don't count the loop on your hook) and crochet 1hdc in ea st along, the chains at the end count as a hdc.

Row 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here and onwards), TURN, 1hdc in your first st, *1hdc in next st, hdcBS around previous hdc post, sk next st* (see special stitch instructions above), repeat from * to * until last st, 1hdc in last st - (18)

Row 3
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first st and ea st along - (18)

Rows 4 - 13
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until desired length is reached. As the bead stitch bulks up your work you will need to work 13 rows or less for this square, instead of the usual 15. Fasten off and tie in all tails.

You will need 2 Ploughed Field Squares for this CAL.

And now you're done! (^-^) I hope you will join me on this fun CAL!
