Crochet Amigurumi Doll CAL - Ep1 Head and Sewing Anime Eyes

Welcome to episode one of my latest crochet-a-long! for my Amigurumi dress up doll crochet pattern, where each Friday for the next few weeks I shall be releasing a new written pattern and video tutorial for the lead up to Christmas.

In my first tutorial today I show you how to crochet the head and sew the anime eyes. I hope you enjoy.

The episodes will include (subject to change)
Episode 1: 21st October: Head and Eyes
Episode 2: 28th October: Body, Legs and Arms
Episode 3: 4th November: Hair Tutorial
Episode 4: 11th November: Dress Pattern
Episode 5: 18th November: Bag and Accessories

This pattern is in US terminology, but details are given below, and in the video for UK terminology. The finished doll measures about 30cm approx in length.

Why not make a boy doll too, simply change the hair style and I'll add some extra tutorials after the main CAL for some trousers or shorts and tops. Maybe some dungarees. Let me know in the comments below what you would like to see in this crochet-a-long.

For the whole CAL you will need the following suggested material

  • DK/Light Worsted weight cotton yarn (yarn weight of 3) in the following colours;
    Suggested yarns are for Rico Design Essential Cotton DK but you can use any yarn you like!
    • A skin colour - suggestions: Rose 01 (pink) or Nougat 78 (brown)
    • A hair colour - suggestions: Banana 63 (yellow) or Nougat 78 (brown)
    • An eye colour - suggestions: Light Blue 27 or Nougat 78 (brown) or Grass Green 66
    • Colours for clothes and accessories - suggestions: Fuschia 14 (dark pink), Violet 20 or any of the colours named above
    • Black and White for eyes
  • 3.5 E/4 crochet hook or any hook that is suitable for the yarn you are using
  • Toy stuffing or yarn scraps for stuffing. I chose 100% polyester toy stuffing available in my most craft stores
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • 1 small button measuring 1cm in diameter, if making the bag
Terminology and conversions for today's tutorial
US single crochet (sc) = UK double crochet (dc)
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
ea = each
sc2tog = single crochet two stitches together (see video for invisible decrease)

Video Tutorial - Head and Eyes

Written Pattern - Head

Round 1
Using your skin coloured yarn, ch4, sl st in first chain to form a loop, crochet 6sc into loop, do not join round - (6)
Alternatively you can use the magic circle/loop technique if you prefer, just crochet 6sc into a magic loop.

Round 2
Without chaining, as you are now working continuously like a snail shell to avoid a seam, crochet *2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (12) You may wish to use a stitch marker.

Round 3
*1sc in next st, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (18)

Round 4
*1sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (24)

Round 5
*1sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (30)

Round 6
*1sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (36)

Round 7
*1sc in next 5 sts, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to end - (42)

Rounds 8 - 17 (10 rounds)
1sc in ea st around - (42)

Round 18
*1sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog* repeat from * to end - (36)

Round 19
*1sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog* repeat from * to end - (30)

Round 20
*1sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog* repeat from * to end - (24)

Pause your work and now sew the eyes. See video for exact detail on how to sew them, but work your eyes 13 rounds down for the top, and over 2 rounds, with a space of 7 sts in between. Work the eye colour first, then the eyelashes and pupil in black, followed by the small dot of white light and white around the edge. Try not to sew them too circular, instead sew straight down when working the inside line, then diagonally down, curve out to the outer edge and then up straight back to the top, and straight back to start across the top. When you have your basic outline of your eye, 'colour' it in by sewing with the same colour, then continue with the details in the other colours to finish.

Round 21
*1sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog* repeat from * to end - (18)

Round 22
*1sc in next st, sc2tog* repeat from * to end - (12)

Stuff your head at this point. Using your darker pink sew a small V shaped mouth.

Rounds 23 - 24
1sc in ea st around - (12)

Pause your work here and tune in next week for Episode 2 Body, Legs and Arms!
