Crochet Amigurumi Doll CAL - Ep2 Body and Legs

Welcome to episode two of my latest crochet-a-long! for my Amigurumi dress up doll crochet pattern, where each Friday for the next few weeks I shall be releasing a new written pattern and video tutorial for the lead up to Christmas.

In my second tutorial today I show you how to crochet the body and legs. I hope you enjoy.

The episodes will include (subject to change)
Episode 1: 21st October: Head and Eyes
Episode 2: 28th October: Body and Legs
Episode 3: 4th November: Hair Tutorial and Arms
Episode 4: 11th November: Dress Pattern
Episode 5: 18th November: Bag and Accessories

This pattern is in US terminology, but details are given below, and in the video for UK terminology. The finished doll measures about 30cm approx in length.

Why not make a boy doll too, simply change the hair style and I'll add some extra tutorials after the main CAL for some trousers or shorts and tops. Maybe some dungarees. Let me know in the comments below what you would like to see in this crochet-a-long.

For the whole CAL you will need the following suggested materials

  • DK/Light Worsted weight cotton yarn (yarn weight of 3) in the following colours;
    Suggested yarns are for Rico Design Essential Cotton DK but you can use any yarn you like!
    • A skin colour - suggestions: Rose 01 (pink) or Nougat 78 (brown)
    • A hair colour - suggestions: Banana 63 (yellow) or Nougat 78 (brown)
    • An eye colour - suggestions: Light Blue 27 or Nougat 78 (brown) or Grass Green 66
    • Colours for clothes and accessories - suggestions: Fuschia 14 (dark pink), Violet 20 or any of the colours named above
    • Black and White for eyes
  • 3.5 E/4 crochet hook or any hook that is suitable for the yarn you are using
  • Toy stuffing or yarn scraps for stuffing. I chose 100% polyester toy stuffing available in my most craft stores
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • 1 small button measuring 1cm in diameter, if making the bag
Terminology and conversions for today's tutorial
US single crochet (sc) = UK double crochet (dc)
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
ea = each
sc2tog = single crochet two stitches together (see video for invisible decrease)

Now crochet 1sc around to centre of eyes at front. Do not worry about your stitch count or beginning/end of round. ch6, sk15 sts, 1sc in next st - (21)

You now have a 21 st count for your first leg. (30sts from last round, divided by 2 = 15 + 6chs = 21) The remaining 15 sts will be for your second leg.

Rounds 2 - 3
1sc in ea st around (and across chains on first round Leg 1 only) - (21)

Round 4
*1sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog* rep from* to last 3 sts, 1sc in last 3 sts - (18)

Round 28
2sc in next st, 4sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st, 1sc in last 7 sts - (19)

Rounds 29 - 30
1sc in ea st around - (19) Stuff leg and body at this point.

Round 31
1sc in next st, *sc2tog* rep from * until end. Sew remaining hole closed using a draw string technique, sew into next st and out through next until hole is closed. Fasten off and hide all tails.

Leg 2

Round 1
Re-join yarn in first st before chs, 1sc in same st, 1sc in next 6 chs, 1sc in remaining 14 sts - (21)

Rounds 2 - 27
Repeat steps 2 - 27 of Leg 1 but on last round stop 2 sts before the end. (Your end of round will have moved back by 2 sts now, don't worry about this, it's so the foot lines up).

Round 28 - 31
Repeat steps 28 - 31 of Leg 1's Foot, not forgetting to stuff your leg before you decrease and sew closed.

Pause your work here and tune in next week for Episode 3 Hair and Arms!
